Welcome to the Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards Feedback Forum!
From June 15 through September 15, 2015, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) sought public input on the state's English Language Arts and Mathematics standards through the Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards (MCCRS) Feedback Forum.
Academic standards define what Mississippi students are expected to learn at each grade level to graduate ready for success in college and career. How the standards are taught – the curriculum or methods and materials used – is decided at the local level, as it was with the previous standards.
The MCCRS Feedback Forum had two primary goals:
- To increase awareness and understanding of the Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics.
- To receive actionable feedback on the standards as part of the MDE’s periodic review process of academic standards.
More than 1,300 people participated in the forum, generating more than 8,000 data points. The forum was widely publicized by the department and education partners, as well as in the media. About 47 percent of those who weighed in on the standards were teachers, about 17 percent were parents, 15 percent were administrators or school district staff, and about seven percent represented the community at-large.
Teams of content experts, teachers from K-12 and postsecondary institutions, and parents worked with agency staff to review all of the feedback collected as part of the forum. These teams proposed revisions that have merit for improving the overall quality and appropriateness of the standards to promote college/career readiness for all students. The Mississippi Board of Education voted on Dec. 17, 2015, to start the APA process on the proposed changes. Following the APA process, the Board will vote on the proposed changes on Jan. 21, 2016. Any changes to the standards would not be implemented until the 2016-17 school year.
