Welcome to the Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards for Science Feedback Forum!

The Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards for Science Feedback Forum has two primary goals:

  • increase awareness and understanding of the Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards for Science
  • solicit actionable feedback on the standards as part of the Mississippi Department of Education’s regular review process of academic standards that have been implemented

The MDE is seeking specific input on the science standards revised in 2015-2016. The Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Science were developed by a team of science educators including teachers, content specialists, curriculum coordinators, and higher education representatives.

This is NOT a referendum on the standards. ONLY comments tied to a specific standard will be considered and reviewed.

The feedback forum will remain open until 11:59p on February 24, 2017 to give those who are interested ample opportunity to provide thoughtful response.

Once the feedback forum ends, the feedback provided will be analyzed by a team of science educators and staff at the Mississippi Department of Education to inform the revision process. The team will then make recommendations on any changes to the Mississippi Board of Education for its consideration during the March 2017 Board meeting.

From December 18, 2015 through January 12, 2016, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) sought public input on proposed changes to the state's English Language Arts and Mathematics standards through the Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards (MCCRS) Feedback Forum.

Academic standards define what Mississippi students are expected to learn at each grade level to graduate ready for success in college and career. How the standards are taught – the curriculum or methods and materials used – is decided at the local level, as it was with previous standards.

A standards review committee evaluated comments collected from a public forum on the standards in 2015. The standards review committee included 40 teachers, five administrators, six postsecondary faculty, two parents and seven specialists in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. The review committee meetings in September, October and November were facilitated by the Mississippi State University Research and Curriculum Unit, Mississippi Department of Education staff, and the Center on Standards & Assessment Implementation (CSAI), which provides state education agencies with research support, technical assistance, tools, and other resources to help inform decisions about standards, assessment, and accountability. CSAI provided assistance to Kentucky, Arizona and Indiana when they reviewed their standards.

Final public comments will be presented to the Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) for consideration, prior to the SBE’s vote on the standards revisions in January. Any changes to the standards would not be implemented until the 2016-17 school year.

The Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics have been taught in Mississippi classrooms since the 2011-12 school year.
