Welcome to the Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards for Science Feedback Forum!
The Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards for Science Feedback Forum has two primary goals:
- increase awareness and understanding of the Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards for Science
- solicit actionable feedback on the standards as part of the Mississippi Department of Education’s regular review process of academic standards that have been implemented
The MDE is seeking specific input on the science standards revised in 2015-2016. The Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Science were developed by a team of science educators including teachers, content specialists, curriculum coordinators, and higher education representatives.
This is NOT a referendum on the standards. ONLY comments tied to a specific standard will be considered and reviewed.
The feedback forum will remain open until 11:59p on February 24, 2017 to give those who are interested ample opportunity to provide thoughtful response.
Once the feedback forum ends, the feedback provided will be analyzed by a team of science educators and staff at the Mississippi Department of Education to inform the revision process. The team will then make recommendations on any changes to the Mississippi Board of Education for its consideration during the March 2017 Board meeting.
If you are ready to proceed…
From January 21, 2017 to February 24, 2017 the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) sought public input on proposed changes to the state's 2010 Science standards through the Mississippi College-and Career-Ready Standards (MCCRS) Feedback Forum.
Academic standards define what Mississippi students are expected to learn at each grade level to graduate ready for success in college and career. How the standards are taught – the curriculum or methods and materials used – is decided at the local level, as it was with previous standards.
A standards review committee evaluated comments collected from the Feedback Forum on the 2018 MCCRS Science Standards. The standards review committee included 47 teachers, several administrators, eight members from IHLs and the MS Science Museum, four Grades K-2 teachers, twelve Grades 3-5 teachers, nine Grades 6-8 teachers, and fourteen high school teachers. A cohort of the review committee will meet in February – May to design intentional, strategic professional development and instructional resources needs based on data derived from the Feedback Forum.
The MDE will make available in the months following the closure of the Feedback Forum a document that identifies key changes in the 2018 MCCRS Science Standards by grade level in comparison to the 2010 MSCCRS Science Standards.
The 2018 MSCCRS Science standards will be piloted in the 2017-2018 school year with full implementation in the 2018-2019 school year for all grades, K-12.
